Product Recall 2026: Undeclared Gluten in Tesco Fried Rice Ready Meal

Tesco is recalling its Tesco Special Fried Rice (350g) with a use-by date of 02 February 2026 because it has been found to contain wheat (gluten) that was not declared on the packaging.

The product has been removed from shelves and online but if you have this lingering at home return to point of sale for a full refund. Do not eat it is unsafe for Coeliacs.

Fried rice is a rarity to find without gluten in due to the soy sauce used. There are gluten free alternatives such as tamari but they are rarely seen in ready meals. However, there are exceptions such as some sushi ready meals have gluten free soy sauce in them, so it is not unheard of.

Allergen labelling exists to protect people with food allergies and intolerances. When a product contains an allergen like gluten but doesn’t list it on the label, consumers with sensitivities are unable to make safe, informed choices. It is also illegal for a product to be sold without the correct allergens highlighted in the UK.

This isn't the first time that a Tesco product has been recalled recently due to undeclared gluten, in October 2025, they recalled Free From Breadcrumbs due to undeclared gluten - in a specifically free from product. A whole new can of worms opened over that one!

You can read more about this fried rice recall on Food Standards website

All product recalls get announced on Food Standards Agency website, it is always a good idea to keep an eye out as mistakes do happen and recalls can happen anytime, and not necessarily for gluten, it could be all manner of reasons.
