Are you looking for an easy gluten free dessert to make with ripe bananas? I was looking for something to do with my overripe bananas to that wasn't a gluten free banana bread or banana pancakes and this is what I ended up with. A beautiful gluten free banana crumble, a delicious twist on a traditional fruit crumble, combining soft, sweet bananas with a crisp, golden crumble topping.

The banana filling is flavoured with light brown sugar, warming cinnamon and a hint of vanilla, while a little cornflour helps create a lovely thick, syrupy sauce as the bananas bake. The crumble topping uses gluten free plain flour, butter and oats for a satisfying crunch, with extra cinnamon to complement the sweet banana filling. If you can't tolerate gluten free oats, they can be switched to extra gluten free flour.

This easy banana crumble serves two people generous size portions and is ideal for using up bananas that have become a little too ripe to enjoy on their own. It takes just a few minutes to prepare before baking in the oven until bubbling and golden.

Serve your gluten free banana crumble warm on its own, or make it extra special with a dollop of cream, custard or a scoop of ice cream. Just check that any accompaniments are gluten free, too.

Whether you're looking for a simple gluten free pudding, an alternative to apple crumble or a comforting way to use up leftover bananas, this easy banana crumble is well worth trying.

Here are some tips and FAQs about Gluten Free Banana Crumble

Yes! Simply replace the 25g of gluten free oats with an additional 25g of gluten free plain flour. The topping will still be delicious, although its texture may be slightly different.

For the crispiest topping, it is best enjoyed freshly baked. You can prepare the banana filling and crumble topping separately in advance, then assemble and bake when ready.

Serve warm with cream, custard or vanilla ice cream. If you need to eat gluten free, check the ingredients of your chosen accompaniment.

If you switch the butter to a dairy free block it can be made dairy free but may have a slightly different texture.

Method

  1. To make the banana base, peel and roughly chop ripe (or overripe) bananas into chunks, around half inch thick is fine.

  2. Toss the banana, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, cornflour and water into a baking dish, mix thoroughly so the banana is well coated in the other ingredients and spread evenly across the dish. Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, place the gluten free plain flour and oats (if you can't tolerate gluten free oats, switch for the same quantity of extra gluten free plain flour).

  4. Cut the cold butter into cubes and add to the gluten free flour and oats along with brown sugar and cinnamon. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients until you get a breadcrumb consistency.

  5. Scatter the crumble on top of the banana mix then place in an oven preheated to gas mark 6/200c for 20-25 mins until the top is nicely brown and crisp.

  6. Serve immediately either on it's on or with a dollop of cream or ice cream.
