Christmas Supermarket Free From Products 2024

This blog was featured in

The Christmas gluten free products have made there way onto the free from shelves in the supermarkets, this year I am sure they are all using the same free from manufacturers as they all seem to have mostly the same stuff in which I think is kind of a shame, it would be nice to have some variety rather than all the same thing. That being said there are the odd interesting new gluten free products in there too.

Gluten free sticky toffee tarts seem to be the in product this year, ironically, last year Sainsburys was the only supermarket to do these, this year all the supermarkets EXCEPT Sainsburys have them. Millionaires cookies are another one that are in all the supermarkets along with a variety of different mince pies (Tesco have 4 different gluten free mince pies this year). When in comes to savoury the only product which seems to be mostly across the board is Nairns gluten free cracker selection.

When it comes to different products, the stand out one is Asda's Stollen Style Slices, I know a lot of people love stollen and always ask for a gluten free one. Unfortunately it is nothing like a stollen though, just a sponge with fruit and almonds so don't be fooled. If you want a stollen you still might have to make it yourself - I have a recipe for a gluten free one here. However Asda and Waitrose also have chocolate cherry tiffin, M&S have gluten free bread sauce and Sainsburys have chocolate enrobed orange cream cookies.

As usual the products are very focussed on the sweet side, barely any savoury gluten free products have made the free from shelves, unless any come into the fridges and freezers in the next month or so (I will update if they do). Sometimes gluten free party stuff does make it's way in later on.

When I posted pictures of all the products on my Facebook people said everything was a lot more expensive than last year but when I look back to last years Christmas gluten free blog, the prices seem mostly the same for Tesco and slight increases in Sainsburys, but Asda and M&S in particular seem to have some bigger increases. I will write last years price next to the product if they were available and I had the price noted down so you can see the difference. I can't compare Waitrose as I didn't get round to finding their Christmas products last year.

Here are all the free from gluten free products I've found so far.

That's a great comprehensive list. Thank you. I would suggest though that as well as looking at the gluten content or lack of it, to be aware that GF doesn't mean they are necessarily healthy to eat. Just as a random example, my sister-in-law gave me a Waitrose free from mince pie. It tasted extremely sweet, Cecking the ingredients it contained both sugar and fructose syrup, so is likely in the junk food category. I'm not singling out Waitrose, it is just that theirs was what was bought, and is a brand that is usually thought of as high quality. Tony

Free from items are generally higher in sugar, salt and additives anywhere. Gluten free doesn't mean healthier in the slightest. The only time gluten free eating is healthy is if you are clean eating (meat, fish, veg, fruit etc, avoiding anything processed). Switching from a gluten filled cake to a gluten free one doesn't make it healthy - sugar is usually used to help improve the flavour more in free from products than none gluten free. Unless you are switching to free from due to Coeliac or gluten intolerance you are better eating regular processed junk, not because it is healthier.
It seems very difficult to find savoury gluten free party food for Christmas. Your list has very few options at the main supermarkets. Any thoughts on alternatives?

There is few little in the supermarkets from what I have seen, M&S are usually the best place for gluten free party food but I haven't yet been in to check.
Hi, can't see anyone doing Christmas Cake slices, has anyone noticed any? Thanks

Christmas Cake slices are on the lists for Asda, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Waitrose, with full size cakes or cake bars in M&S, Asda and Waitrose.
I'm trying to leave a comment on a recipe and also trying to contact you to explain that I can't leave a comment on a recipe, and in both cases nothing happens when I hit submit

Honestly can't say I've seen any, TK Maxx sometimes do them so worth trying there.
