Gluten Free Treacle Scone

Back to all recipes.
Spiced treacle scones, a classic Scottish scone which is perfect for autumnal days, this gluten free take has the delicious flavour of the molasses and spices and is perfect with jam, we loved ours with morello cherry, but any jam works well. Or how about butter and jam like I served mine.

Gluten Free Treacle Scone

Ingredients

460g gluten free self raising flour
1tsp mixed spice
1tsp cinnamon
1/2tsp ground ginger
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
50g butter
25g dark brown sugar
2tbsp treacle
200ml milk

Method

  1. In a large bowl mix together the flour, mixed spice, cinnamon, ginger, bicarb and set aside.

  2. In a saucepan place the butter, sugar and treacle and place on a low heat until melted and combined together.

  3. Add the treacle mix and milk to the bowl and using a wooden spoon mix into a dough. When it becomes to stiff to use the spoon, use your hands to bring the mix together. It should all come together into one ball which isn't too sticky but also doesn't crumble apart. If it is sticky add a little more gluten free flour.

  4. Roll out until about an inch or so thick and cut into circles using a cutter a few inches diameter. You should get 6 scones from the mix.

  5. Place on a grease and lined baking tray and bake on gas mark 7/220c for 15-20 mins until risen and golden.

  6. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Serve with jam and cream or just with butter!

Should be able to get gluten free self raising in any supermarket. You can use plain flour just add 1tsp of baking power per 100g of plain flour.
