Mad Hatters is a lovely little cafe in Chester, I have been a few times since the first time I went back in October, they cater so well to Coeliacs and have a nice variety of food available, their decor also gets me everytime, being an Alice In Wonderland fan, the mad hatters tea party theme is wonderful.
The first time I went here nothing screamed out gluten free to start with, even the menu isn't very obvious on the gluten free side, but when asked they can do most of the menu gluten free, you can read our review from the first time we went Mad Hatters here
, on that visit I just had a sandwich and a wonderful cake and had the same many times since. However this visit was a little different, I'd been thinking about trying the afternoon tea for a while, so decided on spur of the moment to ask if they could do me one gluten free as I already knew everything on it they had gluten free alternatives for i.e. gluten free bread for sandwiches, scones and cakes (beware you have to order any afternoon teas in advance on a Saturday as they get so busy),the waitress said of course I could have a gluten free one, nothing is ever too much trouble at Mad Hatters.
Gluten free afternoon tea at Mad Hatters Tea Room, Chester, Cheshire
After about 15 minutes my three tier afternoon tea arrived, the first tier held a variety of sandwiches along with salad and crisps (which are also gluten free, I checked this a few visits back),the second played host to a gluten free scone, cream and jam and the top, my favourite tier, a fabulous carrot and orange cake, a chocolate mousse and a macaroon. The afternoon tea can be served with any of their teas, something they do so many of, I went for a rooibos option which they let me top up as much as I wanted.
The afternoon tea was delicious, with a great variety, for £14.95 it was lovely, they can also be upgraded to champagne afternoon teas for £19.95. Some gluten free afternoon teas seem to lack, but this isn't the case for Mad Hatters, the bread is always so fresh and soft, the gluten free scone was mouthwatering, however their cakes are always the icing on the cake. For the cakes they usually have the option of chocolate or carrot, I have always hated carrot cake, yet their carrot cake I really can't get enough of and always choose it over the chocolate (shock horror),the chocolate mousse that came with the afternoon tea was delightful so smooth and chocolately, full of flavour and just a pure pleasure to eat, the macaroon was my least favourite of the cakes yet I have nothing bad to say about it, like the rest it was tasty with its creamy mocha middle and soft yet crispy shell.
For an afternoon tea on a budget this one is worth it, they aren't skimpy, every bit of it is worth the price, even if you go for a sandwich rather than afternoon tea all their food is incredible and tasty, the staff are very pleasant and knowledgeable people, nothing is ever too much trouble and they are very aware of cross contamination. If you are ever in Chester they are 110% worth a visit, even if you have to queue out the door like we have done a few times.
