There are just so many gluten free crisps available in the UK now, you won't know which flavour to go for next! This guide will show you which crisps are gluten free, from big brands to supermarket essentials and a Smiths Bacon Rasher alternatives (check out Tesco).

Are UK Crisps gluten free?
Crisps are one of the UK's favourite snacks, and the good news is that many are naturally gluten free. As potatoes, corn and other vegetables don't contain gluten, plenty of crisps can be suitable for people with coeliac disease. However, it's not always as simple as picking up any packet. Flavourings, seasonings and manufacturing processes can introduce gluten to the recipe or into may contain warnings, plus recipes and ingredients can change over time.

Whether you're looking for classic potato crisps, tortilla chips, lentil snacks or supermarket own-brand options, I'll explain what to look for, which brands offer gluten free choices and how to check if a packet is suitable for a gluten free diet. As always, if you have coeliac disease, remember to check the packaging every time you buy, even if you've enjoyed the product before.

What crisps should be avoided by Coeliacs?
While many crisps are naturally gluten free, there are some products that people with coeliac disease should be more cautious about. Gluten can be introduced through flavourings, coatings or seasonings, and some crisps are made using ingredients that contain wheat or barley.

Some products are known to contain gluten, such as Pringles and McCoys, which are made with wheat starch and are not suitable for a gluten free diet.

Even if the ingredients don't contain gluten, some crisp manufacturers include advisory statements such as "May contain wheat" because the product is made in a factory that also handles gluten. Walkers and Doritos both have may contain due to flavour sprays and none of their products are safe for Coeliacs.

How to check what crisps are gluten free
Although many crisps are made from naturally gluten free ingredients, not every variety is suitable for people with coeliac disease. Before buying a packet, as with any product, it's worth taking a few moments to check the label.

1. Read the ingredients list
In the UK, cereals containing gluten such as wheat, barley and rye must be clearly highlighted in the ingredients list. If any of these are listed, the crisps are not suitable for a gluten free diet.

2. Check the flavourings

Plain salted crisps are often gluten free, but flavoured varieties may contain ingredients such as wheat flour, barley malt extract or seasoning mixes that include gluten. If a flavouring contains a gluten ingredient it will be highlighted in brackets next to the ingredient. Salt and Vinegar is one that needs to be closely checked, some use barley malt vinegar, others use different vinegar.

3. Look for a gluten free label

Some manufacturers clearly label their crisps as gluten free or display the Crossed Grain symbol, giving extra reassurance that the product meets strict gluten-free standards. This doesn't mean ones without the label aren't safe though, they just haven't gone through testing to be able to carry the label.

4. Read the allergen information

Some packets may include a precautionary statement such as "May contain wheat" or "Made in a factory that also handles gluten." This isn't the same as wheat being an ingredient, but it does indicate there is a risk of cross-contamination. If you need more info on may contains I have a blog around the subject.

5. Check every time you shop

Manufacturers can change recipes, ingredients and production methods without much notice. Even if you've bought a particular crisp many times before, it's always worth checking the label again before putting it in your basket.

Which crisp brands are gluten free?
There are absolutely loads of crisp brands out there which either label gluten free or are naturally gluten free. Unfortunately the very popular ones like Walkers, Hula Hoops, McCoys and Pringles are NOT gluten free though there are some very good alternatives for most. Burts
I love Burts crisps, I always tend to find them at motorway services and farm shops. They do a lot of delicious gluten free flavours, however their salt and vinegar crisps contain barley malt extract, the only flavour in their range (as of July 2026) that is not safe.

Fairfields Farm
Fairfields Farm are one of the brands that use the cross grain logo on their crisps so are certified gluten free. They have a range of flavours which I have listed below, all of which are gluten free. All flavours are also vegan.

Golden Wonder are a bit all over the shop when it comes to which crisps are gluten free. Some of theirs carry may contain warnings while others are safe. The ones I have listed below are free from may contain warnings and gluten containing ingredients.

Just a side note, the popular Golden Wonder Tomato Ketchup Crisps and Ringos contain wheat so are not gluten free.

I love Hippeas, make with chickpeas instead of potato and certified gluten free. Sometimes can be found in the free from aisle but other places down the crisp aisle. There are only a few options available in the UK, US have more varieties.

Kettle
Kettle are an excellent crisp brand for gluten free and widely available so always a great on the go choice. Many of the standard Kettle crisps options are labelled gluten free including those with balsamic vinegar in, but remember the Kettle Focaccia chips, Sourdough chips and Naan chips are not gluten free.

Tyrrells Lentil Crisps carry a may contain for gluten.

What UK supermarket crisps are gluten free?
As with any product every supermarket is different when it comes to what is gluten free, there are lots of choices for gluten free crisps across all the main supermarkets.

In this guide I have included the major five UK supermarkets and what crisps they offer gluten free along with Marks and Spencer whose range is available in M&S stores and on Ocado. I haven't included Aldi and Lidl purely because I haven't had chance to go and check out their range to see what is safe.

Asda
Asda do a wide range of crisps with no gluten ingredients or may contain warnings. They have good alternative to Walkers Wotsits, Hula Hoops and also Monster Munch if you are looking for a replacement to those.
