If you have know of more 100% gluten free restaurants or cafes, let us know, we currently have a few dozen listed on our where to eat guide, including the ones given below.
1. 2 Oxford Place - Leeds
2 Oxford Place, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 3AX
From my very poor memory, I believe these were one of the first places to be totally gluten free in the UK. They offer coffee and cake for a mid morning snack (and we know from experience, their cake is so good!), a great lunch menu and also a top class evening menu. They can also do afternoon teas but these have to be booked in advance. Unlike a lot of places they also offer a dairy free menu which of course is also completely gluten free too.
UPDATE 2 Oxford Place is now under new management but is still 100% Gluten free, it has however been renamed to The Oxford Place, 2 Oxford Place has reopened up in York.
We visited these a fair while ago but you can still see our review of it here if you wish too.
2. Beyond Bread - London
2 Charlotte Place, Fitzrovia, London, W1T 1SB
Everyone misses bread when they can't have it, with Beyond Bread 100% gluten free bakery you don't have too. Beyond Bread hasn't been open too long but still has a major following, offering baguettes, buns, ciabattas, brioche, loaves, danish pastries, muffins, brownies, toasties, sandwiches, tons of cakes and so many other items it isn't difficult to see why its popular! If we lived closer we would be there like a shot just to be able to get fresh baguettes which I can eat instead of just sniff!
3. Labyrinth Holistic Cafe - Stockton on Tees
The Town House, 2 Skinner Street, Stockton on Tees, TS18 1DY
Labyrinth Holistic Cafe is a national award winning 100% gluten free cafe, not only are they gluten free though they offer lactose free, dairy free, egg free, vegetarian and vegan dishes (they do also serve meat so it's not totally vegan). Their aim is to provide food to feed the Mind, Body and Soul, from pancakes to bubble and squeak, burgers to chilli, fish cakes to all day breakfasts, there is something on the menu to suit everyones needs.
4. Sugar Daddys - Edinburgh
5 Rodney St, Edinburgh, EH7 4EN
This is a place we love, this 100% gluten free bakery sits on the edge of Edinburgh city centre and offers loads of cakes all baked on site in a totally gluten free kitchen, there is a little room to eat in but not much but we still say you should visit, just to eat the delicious cakes while walking around. They have cakes of all kinds that you don't usually see from rose and mango flavoured to the regular chocolate brownie. They also sell bread which is bought in from a different local gluten free bakery. Most of the cakes are all vegan too, which is a bonus for all you vegans or people who can't eat dairy or eggs.
We visited these last year and you can see our review of it here if you wish too.
5. Compass Inn - Winsor
Winsor Rd, Winsor, Copythorne, Hampshire, SO40 2HE
Not to be confused with Windsor, the Compass Inn is in Winsor, Hampshire. The first of its kind in the UK, this was the first pub to be 100% gluten free and from the hundreds of reports we have seen the food is very good too, offering traditional pub grub but with the added bonus of being totally gluten free. They can also cater for parties in their 30 person party room, allow dogs in for those with pets and give a free pudding for every large main meal or roast. Prepared to be stuffed full!
6. Twice As Nice - Newcastle Under Lyme
3 Fogg St, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, ST5 2RE
In my old stomping ground, this totally gluten free bakery sits in the arcade down a tiny alley way in Newcastle Under Lyme, although they don't advertise the fact they are totally gluten free, you can take it from us that they are. Not only are they gluten free but they are also mostly vegan too. Cakes and bread are baked on site but that is not all they offer gluten free, they also sell Voakes gluten free pies, locally bought in gluten free Staffordshire oatcakes, plus mixes by Foodmentalists and other goodies. The cakes are so good, you need to try them! And if you want oatcakes, make sure you order, they sell out FAST.
UPDATE Unfortunately Twice As Nice has now shut down
We have visited a few times this year with them practically being on our doorstep, so yep, we have a review of them.
7. Yorkshire Chippy - Heckmondwike
143 Westgate, Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, WF16 0EW
The first and, at the moment, the only 100% gluten free chippy in the UK. Opening only a few months ago, it is slowly developing a following, offering everything totally gluten free from fish, fish cake, chips, onion rings, scallops to sauces, beans, mushy peas and gravy, there are plenty of options which are all 100% safe for Coeliacs, but also no reason why regular chip shop customers shouldn't enjoy the food available.
UPDATE Unfortunately since this blog was made Yorkshire Chippy has shut it's doors permanently due to lack of support.
8. Ladybird Bakery - Plymouth
Unit 9, Plymouth, PL1 1PS
This family run business has been growing over the last few years, it is 100% gluten free and offers all kinds of bread, cakes and other delicious bakery items. Not only are they a cafe and bakery but they also make special occasion cakes, so if you are in need of a gluten free birthday then these could be your guys if you are local. They can also do dairy free cakes on request.
9. Gluten Free Shop and Cafe - Norwich
21 Timber Hill, Norwich, Norfolk NR1 3JZ
Starting off as a gluten free shop, this shop and cafe grew over the last 6 months to offer more, selling all kinds of gluten free products, it now has a cafe, but of course being a gluten free shop the only right thing to do was make the accompanying cafe 100% gluten free to match. The shop offers local produce, award winning and gourmet foods that are hard to get plus various other free from options, the cafe to match the shop offers a wide variety of gluten free options, but of course you don't need to be gluten free to eat there so all the none Coeliacs are welcome too.
UPDATE: Since the writing of this blog, The Norwich Gluten Free Shop and Cafe has closed down
10. La Polenteria - London
64 Old Compton St, London, W1D 4UQ
The first 100% gluten free Italian in the heart of London, this Italian offers a range of authentic Italian meals without the risk of cross contamination. The menu states what other allergens are in the products and also if they are vegan or vegetarian (and yes their are options for both).
